Our society can be focused on all things anti-aging. Can we find beauty, wisdom, and valor with age and distress? Trees along the beach or on a mountain top may become very weathered with the challenges they face, yet they become even more beautiful. Bonsai artists work hard to show this beauty of age. It is admired. Perhaps we can find beauty in ourselves and others as we age and are affected by our hardships through time. To reflect the natural balance of life, age and beauty, this series is created over many hours from materials natural to the earth and distressing processes from burning the wood, to earth pigments, and etching with tools.
Fine Art: Water is Life, Beach series, Nicole Monahan explores water. After a trip with her mom and sister to beautiful Sanibel Island, Nicole was inspired to create this series to celebrate our connection with water. The area has seen a large drop in wildlife due to the red tide, a casualty of our current environmental problems. Water is life and we rely on water for not only our survival, but the many creatures who also call these beaches home. Water gives us a sense of calm, the horizontal plain, the gently movement and the sound of the crashing waves. Water can also be dangerous. Since the paintings were created, there was a massive hurricane which wiped out much of Sanibel including many places in the paintings. let this be a reminder to cherish places we love and the water within it while we can because it may not be here forever.

Santorini Sunset
While in Santorini, a little pup followed us around for much of the day. As the sun set, we went to a popular sunset spot and to our surprise, the furry friend was already there watching the sun set.

This Young Lion was just lounging in a shade with her mama, with her other female family members close by. so happy. Big yawns and gently flicks of her tail against mama's face.

....This is part of my Sanibel Florida series. I went there on a family trip with my mom and sister in 2019. Every morning we would walk the beach. The weather was bad, but we kept thinking, "a little further and we will find that special shell". We got rained on a lot with walking just a little further....
Tranquility Within
Part of Nicole Monahan's Water Series. This painting was inspired after a family trip with my mom and sister to Florida's Sanibel Island during red-tide. While our time on Sanibel was beautiful, the devastation on the environment made it all too clear how important our waters are for both physical and emotional wellbeing on so many levels. Sanibel Florida is a very beautiful natural area....

...... they were battling the Red Tide. It had devistated the area for fishing which means both humans and animals were affected deaply and were having a hard time recovering.

......We had a cute little room right along the ocean front so we could hear the waves crashing all night. Dispite the storm, I slept on the porch to take it all in. I find storms relaxing especially when you can hear waves. In the morning, the storm had subsided and all was calm despite the dark ominous clouds. Below the waves, beauitiful creatures took refuge to brace against the next storm on the horizan.

...... and our hotel had signs up for a curfew due to the nesting season. If we had been there during nesting season, we would have had to be inside with the lights out by 11pm so they can nest in peace. I'm so happy they do that for the turtles! They really need every chance they can for survival. I'm cheering on every little turtle who is trucking as fast as they can to the ocean! It is hard even without human interferrance. Sadly, we didn't see any Sea Turtles on our visit, but we did come across a huge tourtois walking across the road. They can smell where they are going for 3 miles and will just walk in a straight line until they get there with no bother to humans at all.

$1200.....They zig zag along sticking their long beak in the water logged sand, their reflection darkening the ground beneath them. It was like clock-work each afternoon they came out searching. Such beautiful, busy birds.

...... but it doesn't make them any less special in my book. I will never forget the first time I heard a barred owl hunting call in the middle of the black night as I walked out to my studio. It sounded a bit like a ghost about 5 feet above my head. Not a comforting sound when you don't know its an owl! I do love seeing them during the day quietly sitting so magestically just outside my studio.
